The village of Chilte is located in the northern highlands of Guatemala. The people of Chilte have lived their entire lives without access to electricity. They have been forced to illuminate their nights with a combination of candles and kerosene lamps and have had to travel many miles to the nearest town to pay someone to charge their cell phones. This all changed in January 2018 when Global BrightLight its partner Amigos de la Aldea distributed 100 solar lanterns to 100 families in Chilte. This project was made possible by Global BrightLight board member Jeanne Reisinger and the people who donated to her fundraiser.

Voice of the Village
“My Name is Marta. Before we had solar lanterns, we illuminated our homes with candles or kerosene. Sometimes we would add a piece of cotton or yarn to create more light because the candles and kerosene lamps were too dim to light the entire house. The solar lanterns light up our entire home and don’t hurt our eyes like the candles or kerosene did.””
