About Chupel

The village of Chupel is located in the northern part of central Guatemala. Our local partner Amigos de la Aldea had to drive 6 hours north of Guatemala City and then hike an additional two hours through steep mountainous terrain to reach the village. Even though no one in the community had light in their homes, they greeted us with brilliant smiles. Many people in the village had been using kindling for light before we arrived. They also had to hike an hour to charge their cell phones. The people of Chupel were extremely thankful that they now had access to solar energy to light and power their lives.

Voice of the Village

“As traveling teachers, we have seen what life is like without access to electricity in this community. Working in the school here was the first time that I have experienced this in my life. Students can now study after dark in their homes, which will help them become better prepared academically. ”
